Supporting Those Left Behind: The Essential Role of LOSS Teams
Supporting Those Left Behind: The Essential Role of LOSS Teams
A Call for Hope, Help, and Healing
Suicide is a quiet tragedy that touches every corner of East Texas. It does not discriminate by age, race, income, or faith. Every year, more lives are lost to suicide in our region than many people realize — often in rural counties where close-knit communities feel the loss even more deeply.
Behind each statistic is a person. A family. A congregation. A story left unfinished.
Across East Texas, suicide rates remain stubbornly high. In many of our rural counties, the numbers far exceed state and national averages. The reasons are complex. Isolation is a fact of life in many parts of East Texas, where distances between homes and services stretch long and public transportation is limited. Mental health care is often difficult to access; clinics may have long waitlists or simply may not exist in smaller communities. For many, stigma adds another barrier, especially in places where admitting to struggles with mental illness still feels like a sign of weakness or shame.
Our churches are often where people turn first in times of crisis. Faith communities are woven into the fabric of East Texas life. And yet too many faith leaders feel unsure of how to talk about suicide or how to respond when someone in their congregation is at risk. The fear of saying the wrong thing can lead to silence — and silence can be deadly.
But there is hope.
That hope comes from breaking the silence and replacing it with compassion, education, and connection. It comes from recognizing that suicide prevention is not only possible but something every community member can be a part of. It comes from remembering that even the smallest act of kindness or outreach can shift the balance toward life.
SPARK — Suicide Prevention through Awareness, Readiness, and Knowledge — was created to bring that hope to life in East Texas. We are a coalition of faith leaders, mental health professionals, educators, first responders, and community members working together to change the conversation about suicide. Through SPARK and its sub-initiatives — CARE (postvention support), SHIELD (first responder support), IGNITE (addressing the intersection of substance use and suicide), and RESUS (supporting medical professionals) — we are building a network of readiness and compassion.
A major part of this mission is helping our churches become safe and supportive spaces where people can talk openly about mental health and find resources for help. Faith communities have a vital role to play in suicide prevention. We want them to feel equipped and empowered to speak hope into dark places.
This September, SPARK will host the First Annual Hope, Help, and Healing Conference in Jacksonville, Texas. It will be a day dedicated to education, encouragement, and connection — for pastors, counselors, teachers, first responders, and anyone who wants to be part of the solution. Together, we will explore how we can offer hope to those in despair, practical help to those at risk, and healing to those who have been impacted by suicide.
There is still much work to be done. We must talk openly about suicide. We must support those who are struggling. We must surround survivors and grieving families with love and understanding. And we must remind our neighbors that they are not alone — that there is help, and there is hope.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out. Call or text 988 to connect with the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Talk to your pastor, a counselor, a trusted friend. The hardest step is the first one — but it can lead to life.
At SPARK, we believe that with God’s grace and with the strength of our communities, East Texas can become a region where hope rises stronger than despair. Where stories do not end too soon. And where no one has to walk this road alone.
You are not alone. And together, we can save lives.
